Notes for Joseph (Spouse 1)
Vansom.ged201208: Born in 1790, the orphan son of a British army officer killed in 1791, Joseph Taylor is supposed to have been a clerk at Arbuthnot & Co in Madras until the arrival in India in 1810 of LMS missionary Revd. John Hands, when Joseph became involve d in the work of the LMS. This led eventually to his leaving Arbuthnot & Co. & going to work with Revd John Hands in the mission field.
According to the Register the elder Revd. Joseph Taylor was missionary number 150 and he served with the LMS for 40 years. He was received by Mr Hands as an assistant in the Bellary mission in 1815. He was ordained at Madras, May 1819 and in 181 4 married Emelia Van Someren, sister of Godlieb (George) M. Van Someren. Rev. Taylor was then appointed to Complee, near Bellary but illness prevented him settling there. Having received an invitation from Belgaum, he visited that place, and aft erwards in Sept 1820, removed there and commenced a new station at Belgaum.
On account of ill health and infirmity Revd. Taylor retired from active service after the death, in 1855, of his wife, Emilia. He went to reside at Bombay, with his eldest daughter, Lydia Juliana Taylor Birdwood & her husband, Maj. Gen. Christop her Birdwood, where he died, on Nov 20th 1859
