Vansom.ged201208. Revd. Joseph Van Someren Taylor was LMS missionary number 473 and he served with the LMS for 14 years. He was born July 3rd 1820 at Bellary. He was a church member of Davidson Street Church in Madras in 1837. He studied at Glasgow University an d Theological Academy and was later appointed to Madras and was ordained on July 15th 1845, at Jamaica Row Church, Bermondsey, London. He sailed for India on July 29th 1845 and arrived in Bombay on Dec 28th. After visiting his father at Belgau m he proceeded to Madras, where he received instructions to join Mr Clarkson in the Baroda mission. He arrived at Baroda in Nov 1846. In 1847 he removed with Mr Clarkson to Dhevan Mahi Kantha, where they commenced a mission. On Dec 30th 1847 h e married Eliza Sarah Pritchard (daugter of Rev. George Pritchard, a missionary in Tahiti) and proceeded with his wife to Mahi Kantha. However, due to ill health they both returned to Dollar, Clackmannanshire, Scotland in 1856. Eliza Taylor die d in 1858 after the birth of their son Owen, and in 1859 Joseph Taylor married Georgina Brodie in Dollar. They returned to India and joined the Irish Presbyterian Missionary Society to which the Society the Mahi Kantha Mission had been recentl y transferred by the LMS. His connection with the LMS then terminated. His eldest son by his first wife, Rev. Joseph Field Taylor became a missionary in Gujerat. His third son by his first wife, Rev. Dr. Birdwood Van Someren Taylor became a miss ionary doctor in China with the CMS, and his son from his second marriage, Rev. Arthur Taylor wrote a history of the Taylor family (copy in the SOAS Library, London University).
Rev. Joseph Van Someren Taylor died in Edinburgh on 2nd June 1881.
