"George Uglow Pope D.D., of South India, sometime lecturer in Tamil & Telugu in the University & chaplain of Balliol College, Oxford. Born 24 April 1820. Died 11 Feb 1908. This stone has been placed here by his family & by his Tamil friends in S outh India in loving admiration of his life long labours in the cause of oriental literature & philosophy."
It is likely that he is the reason why Gottlieb, the eldest son of Mary Crisp van Someren and August Friedrich Wolff went to Oxford after being resettled in Europe as a teenager. Hence the immediate reason why the Wolffs became English. |
