Mary Wolff kept house for him from March 1897 - March 1899 when he was in Venice. Alison Wolff has a biography of xx — a fairly appalling character on the Venetian scene — in which Ernest gets an honourable mention.

Jay (Juliet) Wolff : ". . a doctor to the English community in Venice . . They seem to have moved in quite high social circles judging by the calling cards I have which Mary had carefully kept, along with letters. . . Ernest was renowned for b eing eccentric in manner and dress. He was later subject to bouts of depression, thought to been the result of experiences in the 1914-18 war, and eventually he committed suicide. He is mentioned in Sir Osbert Sitwell's autobiography 'Left Hand . Right Hand' in the second volume called 'The Scarlet Tree'. Ernest married Ivy Fletcher and had a number of children.

Glaser-Köngeter adds "genannt in der "Furche" vom D.C.S.V. Deutsch.-Christl.-Studentenverband"
