| Notes for Col Godlieb James VAN SOMEREN |
Vansom.ged201208. Cadet Papers for the Indian Military 1858-9. Retired 1 Feb 1892. In 1901 census, retired and living in London with wife Sarah & daughters Marion & Katherine.
Glaser-Köngeter : "Great-uncle Godlieb van Someren was Colonel of the Forest Department of Mysore, i.e. officer of an Indian regiment and at the same time an Indian forestry official. Earlier it was possible for an Englishman to hold two positi ons. Uncle Godlieb and Aunt Sarah (nee Marsden) with their four children also invited Mother (née Wolff, a daughter of Mary Crisp) to spend her holidays with them. How many memories are associated with Bangalore and were to awaken in Mother' s heart! Was it not here that her grandmother (Lydia née Pascal) spent the last months of her life before dying on the way back to Madras?
Mother tells how Uncle Godlieb had to carry out military exercises once a year. Once however, when his servant went to fetch the uniform he found, to his no small dismay, that it had been eaten to bits by white ants and fell into a pile of dust. |
