Vansom.ged201208. Information from Schaffter Family Bible & CMS records, Birmingham University Paul Pacifique Schaffter, son of
..Schaffter and Marianne (Born
) Born at
., Canton Bern, Switzerland on January 21, 1801. Entered the Lutheran Theological College at Bern (Basel) in January, 1821, and after studying there for five years was ordained at Bircheim (Kircheim ??) in the Kingdom of Wurttemberg, by Dr. Bannmeyer, Superintendent of Consistory. Family tradition has it that the church Missionary Society of London, England had appealed for volunteers to go to the mission field and that five Swiss youths, recently ordained as Lutherans, offered their services.
He was 26 when he joined the CMS; he came from Munster, Switzerland; he had been at the Basle Seminary and received Lutheran Orders; in 1826 he enrolled at the CMS College; After 1 ½ years at the Church Missionary Society training college at Is lington, London, England, Paul Pacifique Schaffter was sent to India, arriving at Madras October 3, 1827. On 10 Jun 1827 [Dates do not match!] he was sent to Mayaveram, South India & in 1828 to Madras; in 1831 he transferred to Dohnavur, Tinnevelly & then in 1834 to Satthankulam; on 18 Jun 1835 he left the CMS with Rhenius; in Sept 1838 he rejoined & was sent to Nallur; on 24 Aug 1842 he journeyed to England, returning to India on 2 Aug 1844; P.P. Schaffter was married on April 29, 1829 by Reverend Mr. Harper, Secretary of the C. M. S. to Angelica Juliana Van Someren, eldest daughter of Godlieb (George) Van Someren, born in Madras in 1812 & who died at Suviseshapuram on 10 Nov 1859 aged 47 years, one month and two days |
| Notes for Angelica Juliana (Spouse 1) |
Vansom.ged201208. Earlier note from Elizabeth Wilde suggested both died in the Indian Mutiny but that their two sons survived the Indian Mutiny massacre, the eldest in England at the time, the youngest saved by his Indian ayah (nursemaid) & probably brought up b y William Van Someren & Harriet Taylor.
'Missionsleben' source has her being known as Emily, and being the eighth child William being the first the next one (Mary Crisp) being born in 1828. However, Elizabeth Wilde knows her as the eldest daughter.
Date of death from EW (later research) is specific. The Mutiny took place 1857 - 8 and was well over by 1859. Suviseshapuram is in Tamil Nadu, far from where the Mutiny happened. |
